After I quickly got settled I met up with the other journalists and got to experience an authentic Valencia dinner. I forgot that because my work is based in Milan, but yet is an international company, they assume that you speak Italian and they grouped me with Italian press. So, the majority of the evening was me sitting at dinner listening to the group speak Italian in Spain. It was the beginning of me becoming completely immersed in the language
The next day was a full day at the ceramics fair. But because I don’t speak or understand Italian or Spanish I kinda did my own thing which was taking videos, finding out some of the trends in tiles and getting to know people. So at lunch at the fair I separated from the Italians to take some establishing shots of the area. For press there is a buffet lunch so I sat beside this Indian woman. I was talking to her about what I do and that I live in Milan and that I am with Italian press…then the Italians saw me and spoke to me in Italian that they are going to the press room. So I said back to them in Italian that i will see them soon the Indian woman looked at me and said, ‘your English is really good!’ Lol, I forgot to tell her that I am Canadian.
